What type of test is performed?
What type of test is performed?
PicMed uses two types of COVID-19 testing to check for active infection. Rapid-result testing locations perform antigen testing, which returns results within 30 mins.
Lab testing locations perform polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing, which returns results within 2-3 days.
If you are getting your testing for a specific purpose such as travel, please ensure you are selecting the proper test required by your airline, destination or other requiring organization. Certain travel destinations and airlines do not accept rapid-result testing.
We also provide blood antibody tests, which indicate whether the patient has been infected in the past.
How accurate are the rapid antigen test?
Antigen tests are 98% accurate. The two authorized antigen tests, which include Sofia 2 SARS Antigen FIA by Quidel Corporation and BD Veritor Plus SARS-CoV-2 Assay by BD, produce results in 15 minutes.
Compared to molecular tests, antigen tests are useful due to their speed but are not as sensitive as the lab based PCR test, meaning that there is a greater chance of a false-negative result. However, they are very specific for the virus so positive results are going to be highly accurate.
If your antigen test comes back positive, it is very likely that you have the virus. If your test comes back negative and you are having symptoms, you will probably want to confirm your negative result using a molecular test.
How is my sample for testing collected?
While you remain in the vehicle, you will be given a swab and asked to collect a sample of nasal secretions. This is done by inserting the swab into your nostril approximately 1 inch into the nasal passage (midway) with the most visible drainage or the nostril that is most congested if drainage is not present. The swab is rotated several times, removed gently and this process is repeated on the other side. Please note that you need to administer your own swab or bring someone that can do it for you.
How and when will I get results?
Results for rapid testing are generally returned within 30-45 minutes of specimen collection For samples sent to our lab partners, average turnaround time for receiving results is 2-3 days..
